Chapter 15

RUBY

I dedicated myself to becoming an emotionless pawn. If Cadoc wanted me to attend a dinner, I would happily oblige.

My emotions had to stay contained. I had to win this game.

Opal entered my room carrying a large white box. “Are we really doing this?” she asked. “Are we really going to this dinner?”

“We don’t have a choice,” I answered flatly. “He’ll hurt Aiden if we don’t go, or worse. We can’t risk it. Not this early on.”

“Fine,” she replied. “But I’m warning you, these dresses are actually ridiculous. And that’s pretty bad coming from me.”

“There’s no way it’s that bad,” I moaned. Invitations had been delivered to each of our bedrooms, and Opal’s had apparently come with a not-so-modest dress to wear. “Let’s not pretend like you don’t love it, anyway. If he wants us to wear the dresses, we don’t really have a choice. Come on. Let me see it.”

Opal lifted the diamond-covered fabric from the delicate white box she had brought it to my room in. I had to remind myself to keep my jaw shut as she held it up.

“Is that all of it?” I asked. The dress, if you would even call it that, was floor length, but it was covered in sheer lace and ultra-thin fabric. It was nothing like what we wore back in Nevervein, with the thick skirts and corset bodices.

“Yes!” she yelled. “This is all there is! Gods above, how am I supposed to eat in this?” I stood from my bed and walked over to her, double checking her box to ensure she wasn’t missing something. Like the rest of the dress, for instance. “I already checked like a billion times,” she said. “And here, read this.”

She handed me a note that I read aloud.

“A beautiful dress for a beautiful woman. I hope you can join me to celebrate the arrival of our dear friends.”

“Have you even opened yours yet?” She asked, eyeballing the white box that sat on my dresser.

“No,” I spat. I had been as short as I could with Opal, but she wasn’t picking up on any of it. If she knew about the fight she had started on the ship between Jax and I, she wasn’t showing it.

And I wasn’t about to bring it up here.

Opal huffed and stomped over to my box, opening it herself. She looked in the box without touching it, and then looked at me. “This has to be some sort of joke,” she said.

I followed her to the dresser and looked inside. “No way,” I whispered as soon as I saw it. Inside the box was a dress similar to Opals, yet more extravagant in every way. Her dress was littered with white fabrics, while mine was gold. Pure gold. It shimmered in the light as I grabbed the tiny, loose straps and held it in front of me. “And I thought it couldn’t get any worse.”

Opal choked in a laugh next to me. “Don’t worry,” she mocked. “It’ll really bring out your eyes.
